Westerlee punt net

Since three weeks I have bees flying around the house looking for holes to get in. As sudden as they appeared, they also disappear.
Bees can be pretty scary when they awake in the spring. I read somewhere that a bee that is not busy and well fed gets cranky. You know what a cranky bee does and exactly that is why most people don’t want them too close.
I like the bees better than wasps since the bee has an important role in our food chain and it seems they don’t care much about our presence. The timing of these bees seems connected to the nice yellow flowers of the cole seed nearby. I suppose these are honey bees. The photo shows some of the 15 boxes standing next to the field. Bees are busy flying in and out. However, cyclists and pedestrians have no problem passing them since these the bees only care about their pollination task. When the wind is in the right direction the smell of the cole seed is very distinctive. The pollen grains are everywhere as a yellow powder.
In the U.S. it seems many hives didn’t survive the winter. Therefore seeing the same number of ‘tourist bees’ as last year in my own little swarm is a good sign.

While most surrounding countries got problems after snowfall, Westerlee only got 2.5 cm on thursday. Since the KNMI issued a weatheralarm, everyone was prepared for the worst and schools shut down around 1 pm. It seemed unnecessary, but a little more wind and snow can cause many casualties.
On friday temperatures were above zero and the roads are nicely clean.
Looking back it seems hard to measure the snowheight. A little wind causes large differences, so what is the right way. The type of snow matters as well. An icy type will not gain height but definitely contains water, of course it is easy to do an experiment what contains the most water. Just let the volume of a cup of snow melt, or measure the weight on a scale. While cycling I hate the wet snow the most since it sticks to everything and even slows you down.

A recent earthquake map from the royal dutch meteorological institute KNMI shows no activity in the Oldambt region. More specific east of the line Groningen - Delfzijl doesn’t show a single dot. That means there has been no recent seismic activity. In the northwestern part of Groningen the most recent earthquake was january 26, 2007.
You may ask why is this worth to be mentioned? 1. There is a large gas exploration in this region along the border with Germany. 2. In Westerlee Akzo Nobel is extracting salt that is expected to cause a few cm decrease in height. A decrease that is called in dutch bodemdaling . Activities to create a gas storage near Pekela don’t seem to counter the effects. Besides a gas storage will only be used during the winter.
The next decades the sealevel is expected to rise. Recent changes in the weather allready show problems to get rid of excessive amounts of rain. Most of the water flows into the Waddenzee at low tide. A large outdoor expo about the decrease of the height is in Nieuw Statenzijl, which lies near the border.

Krakend ijs bij het lopen, hollend van de ene bevroren plas naar de andere. Zo maar een gedachte die opkomt bij dit heldere vriesweer. Met de inval van de kou lijken de vogels ook ineens verdwenen rond de huizen. De takken zijn enkel silhouetten die afsteken tegen de lucht. Geen vogels en evenmin sluipende katten rond de stammen.
Jammer dat komend weekend veel van het ijs wel weer verdwenen zal zijn. Opmerkelijk was ditmaal bij het begin van de koude periode dat sloten niet en de ijsbaan juist wèl bevroren was. Blijkbaar staat er nog zo’n stroming van de afvoer van het vele regenwater, dat bevriezen er nog even niet in zit.

Met de nadruk op de achtergrond van de naam blijft de vraag ‘waar is Westerlee eigenlijk te vinden?’ In de provincie Groningen is het onderdeel van de gemeente Scheemda. Grote omringende plaatsen zijn Winschoten, Veendam en de Pekela’s. Op de kaart is dit nog duidelijker zichtbaar.
Het satellietbeeld toont hier fraai het verschil ten noorden en ten zuiden van de Hoofdweg. Noordelijk groen op de klei en zuidelijk grijs in het veen. Als u verder inzoomt ontdekt u de kerk. De kerk was oorspronkelijk de oostgrens van het dorp. Tegenwoordig ligt de grens oostelijker even voorbij het spoor. Het zwaartepunt van de bebouwing is tegenwoordig ook in dit nieuwere deel.

Yesterday around 6 p.m. you could see the temperature started to drop below zero (deg.Celcius). This morning it was -3.2 at 7 am. We had a dry night and a beautiful sunrise that I just missed. The moist on the glass seems to add some flames to the sun.
Between 7 and 8 the temperature dropped further to a -4 degrees at a height of 3 m.

The wind meter in the relatively shielded centre of Westerlee shows a wind gust of 10 m/s around 1 p.m. The storm is getting serious. Most of the possible danger comes from branches fallen of the trees and the wind gusts.

The last 24 hour were wet with 27 mm of rain in Westerlee. I connnected a tube to the pump in the pond to get rid of the excessive amount of water in the garden. Although the village lies on a wall of sand there is clay on top.

The moment you think the wind gets calmer, the rain is pouring with showers of 10 mm/hr. The website of the dutch meteorological institute is hard to reach. I suppose everyone wants to know how long this will last. A weather and traffic alarm is issued that means you are advised not to be be outside. It is expected many travellers will have trouble to get home.

Time for another cup of tea and a check around the house…

Place names usually contain a hint to the environment. This way he same name can be found in different provinces. Emigrants often use a known place names in their new country what makes that dutch sounding place names exist all over the world. Westerlee is no exception.
The name Westerlee can be divided in the two words west and lee. West or Wester is a only a variation of the same, the direction of the sundown, west opposite to east. You may suspect there is a town called Oosterlee, since oost is dutch for east. Although there are indications it once existed, but the older references are of a parish Heiligerlee-Westerlee. The parish, or kerspel in dutch, was the government in the town. The Norbertine monastery in Heiligerlee founded in1239 owned much of the land in Westerlee. Perhaps they liked a more divine name better and changed it to Hilligerlee. (Heilig is dutch for holy.) Kloosterholt is usedas well, klooster is dutch for monastery and even today you see the use of Kloosterholt for clubs and shops.

Back to Westerlee, because what is a lee? A lee is the same as Ee and Ae, both refer to a stream of water. No wonder you find this in many dutch place names since large parts of the Netherlands were too wet for habitation. Water is also a natural boundary. A boundary post can be easily shifted what often happened in boundary disputes. Streams of water on the other hand remain visible for centuries.

Who today searches for a lee in Westerlee will not see more than a wide ditch. Best candidate is a ditch that can also work as an important boundary. That ditch is called the Siepsloot and lies in the west between Meeden and Westerlee. Sloot is dutch for ditch. This water was a river called Zijpe or Letze, but is changed by the reallocation in the 1970’s. In the 19th century it is known as the Zijpsloot. Professor Stratingh mentions in his book De Dollard that it flows into the Ooster Ae. This Ooster Ae is the follow up of a ditch the monastery had dug at the eastside of Westerlee.
This Zijpe is also important for anther reason. It was the boundary between the dioceses of Osnabrück at the Meeden side and Münster to east.

The dissection of the english word westerly doesn’t interpret the suffix ly. Ly comes from the rules for an adverb suffix. Only the explanation situated toward the west or coming from the west is mentioned.

Plaatsnamen bevatten vaak een verwijzing naar de omgeving. Eenzelfde plaatsnaam kan zo in diverse provincies voorkomen. Emigranten gebruiken vaak een bekende plaatsnaam in het nieuwe land zodat Nederlands klinkende dorpen en steden over de hele wereld voorkomen. Westerlee vormt daarop geen uitzondering.

De twee woorden die de naam Westerlee vormen zijn west en lee. West is de richting van de zonsondergang, west tegenover oost. Wester komt voor als werkwoord, dus “naar het westen gaan”. Het doet vermoeden dat er ook een Oosterlee is geweest. Er zijn inderdaad aanwijzingen voor zo’n plaats, maar in de tijd van het kerspel Heiligerlee-Westerlee lijkt daarvan geen sprake. Het kerspel is het kerkelijk bestuur, de kerk was ten tijde van het Premonstratenzer klooster grootgrondbezitter in de omgeving. De naamsverandering in Hilleger- of Heiligerlee is dan goed mogelijk. In de volksmond is een andere variant, Kloosterholt, nog lang in gebruik en ook tegenwoordig zijn er nog veel verwijzingen naar het klooster.

Terug naar Westerlee, want wat is een lee? Een lee blijkt hetzelfde als Ee en Ae; het verwijst naar een waterstroom. Het zal niet verbazen dat beide uitgangen veel voorkomen in het natte Nederland. Water is een natuurlijke barrière en veelgebruikt als natuurlijke grens. Grenspalen zijn eenvoudig te verplaatsen wat ook dikwijls gebeurde bij grensconflicten. Waterstromen zijn echter ook eeuwen later nog goed herkenbaar in het landschap.

Wie in Westerlee op zoek gaat naar een lee komt niet verder dan een brede sloot. Beste kandidaat is de sloot die ook fungeert als grenssloot. Deze sloot heet tegenwoordig de Siepsloot en ligt tussen Meeden en Westerlee. Oorspronkelijk was dit het riviertje de Zijpe of Letze, maar is gewijzigd bij de ruilverkaveling in 1970. In de 19e eeuw is het bekend onder de naam Zijpsloot. Hoogleraar Stratingh schrijft in zijn boek De Dollard dat deze Zijpsloot uitkomt in de Ooster Ae. Dit water is een vervolg van een door kloosterlieden gegraven sloot aan de oostkant van Westerlee.

Belangrijk aan de Zijpe is dat het de grens vormt tussen twee bisdommen. Namelijk het Bisdom Münster aan de kant van Meeden en het Bisdom Osnabrück, waar Westerlee en het naburige Reiderland onder vallen.

De ontleding van de Engelse variant westerly, bijvoorbeeld in de Encyclopdia Brittanica, gaat voorbij aan de lettergreep -ly. De uitgang ly komt dan voort uit de spellingsregels voor een bijwoord (adverb suffix). Alleen de betekenissen gelegen naar het westen of komende uit het westen worden genoemd. In het Nederlands is het dan westelijk.
